With the New York Yankees Christmas Shopping spree apparently over, and Spring Training 2009 days away, I'm anxiously awaiting the first glimpses of Mark Teixeira taking his hacks in Tampa, and eventually the Bronx.
He will be playing the position where his idol Don Mattingly played during the 80s and 90s for the next 8 years.
With the Yankee Farm System already depleted, the Yankees will need to give up their first round pick as Compensation for signing the Type-A free agent.
Type-a Free Agent are determined based on the Elias Sports Bureau rankings, and Type A Free Agents are those ranked in the top 20%.
But wait a minute what happens when a team signs three?
Who gets their first round pick?
Based on the Elias Rankings, the team that signs the Portuguese Player is entitled to the 1st round pick!
Or it might be according to who is ranked highest...
Mark Texiera 98.889 Elias Ranking (Angels 1st round pick)
CC Sabathia 98.110 Elias Ranking (Brewers 2nd round pick)
A.J. Burnett 89.729 Elias Ranking (Blue Jays 3rd round pick)
So for anyone keeping count...
The Yankees kept him away from the Red Sox, and signed A.J. Burnett from The Blue Jays for a third round pick!
